Calvert Home
The Calvert Home is a contributing property to the New Market Historic District with the original part of the home dating to 1770. The structure features thick solid brick walls, 9/9 and 6/6 double hung windows, and four fireplaces. The home is emblematic of the historic built environment that defines New Market.
The project includes major renovations and restoration of the building for adaptive reuse as office space. The work includes restoration of the original wood floors, repair of the existing plaster walls and ceilings, refurbishment of original windows and doors, and refinishing of all surfaces. Considerable efforts were taken to reinforce the aging floor structure and rebuild portions of the original brick walls with deteriorated mortar. New interventions include accessible toilet facilities and updates to the electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.
The rehabilitation effort satisfies the requirements of the National Park Service’s Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings. This project received the 2024 John H. Adamson Excellence in Historical Preservation Award by the Shenandoah County Historical Society.
